Don’t Be A-Pathetic
A few months back, I was asked an intriguing question. Someone asked me what I believed to be the greatest hindrance to the younger generation of Christians. As I thought about that question, I thought of many things that hinder young followers of Christ. I could have said sexual impurity, self-centric living, doubt, lack of education, lack of spending time in God’s Word. All of these would have been answers that could have sufficed for the question, but I didn’t say any of these answers. In fact, the answer I gave probably was a shock, at first, to the crowd.
I said that the greatest hindrance to the next generation of Christ-followers (and I would say to all Christ-followers) is apathy. Apathy is defined as an absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement. At first glance, there doesn’t seem to be an environment of apathy within the Church, but apathy cannot be seen as just emotion. Apathy must lead to action.
It is this action that many in the Church are missing. We have the passion to make a difference. We have the emotion to change lives. We have the excitement to change the world. What we are missing is the action that should follow.
There are so many who say they want to make a difference in the world and yet when they have the opportunity to do so, there are only excuses that follow. If you want to make a difference; if you want to change the world; if you want to truly follow Christ then you must be willing to act on the passion, emotion and excitement.
So how do we stop the apathy? It’s simple. Just get involved in something bigger than yourself and be willing to make sacrifices.
It’s really not that difficult to make a difference. There are many organizations and opportunities to make a difference on a daily basis. The question is not what is there to do, but what will you do. And, like anything that is valuable in life, making a difference only happens when you are willing to sacrifice something. Whether it is money, time or some other blessing God has given you, if you want to make a difference, you must be willing to let go of what you think is yours.
So now here comes the pitch. If you want to get a part of a great organization and are willing to sacrifice a little bit, then here is the easy way to make a difference.
Thursday, December 15th, Bread of Life Mission is hosting its 3rd annual Give Hope Gala. The event is focused on raising awareness and support for the people of Kenya and the Sudan. This year we are focusing on raising money to help with medical care in Turkana Kenya. In Turkana, the people have to walk over 55 kilometers, that’s over 34 miles, to get to the nearest medical facility. Could you imagine?
Well, we want to help this injustice by providing the people with the medical care that they need…and you can help. There are two ways you can help with this cause. One, come to the event. The ticket cost is $20/person or $35/couple until December 8th. Buy a ticket and come enjoy the night.
The second way you can help is to donate. If you can’t make it to the event, but you want to help the people in need, then just follow the link below and give what you can. $5, $15, $100…anything will be used by God to further the care for his people, as well as bring the Gospel to the unreached people of Kenya.
The question is not…what can you do? The question is…What will you do? Don’t be apathetic. Make a difference.
