Do You Hear What I Hear?

Have you ever wondered if God still speaks today?  There are so many who desire to hear the voice of God and yet so many who say that they can never or have never heard God speak.  It seems strange that some people can boisterously claim that God spoke to them, while others seem to never hear even a peep.  So what is the deal?  Does God still speak?  If so, how can we hear him?

It seems funny to me that a God who spoke for hundreds of years would decide to shut his mouth one day to never be heard from again, as if he is Willy Wonka hiding in his chocolate factory.  If the same God of the Bible exists today, then shouldn’t the same voice be heard by his creation?  If God chose to speak to hundreds, thousands of years ago, then what would prohibit him from speaking to millions, even billions today?

The simple answer is us.

I don’t believe that God has chosen to stop speaking and if he has not chosen to stop, then why are so many people claiming that they can’t hear him?  I think the easy answer, and the correct one, would have to do with us.

Maybe it is not God’s fault we can’t hear Him, but maybe, just maybe, we are the ones to blame.  Maybe our busy lives crowd out God’s voice.  Maybe we allow so many other voices into our lives that we can’t discern which one is God’s voice.  Maybe our sin prohibits the Holy Spirit from doing His work.  Maybe our ability to listen has been affected by our desire to talk.

There are so many maybes that we can’t deal with them all, however, I am going to take the next few posts to discuss how you and I can hear better from God.  If it is not a God problem, but rather a human problem, then at least we can fix it.

God is still speaking loud and clear today just like He was to Adam, Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and Paul to name a few.   God is speaking to you and I, but the question is “Are we listening for His voice?”
